PARIS (Sputnik)— Russia and China have been negotiating a possible deal to allow Beijing to conduct oil and gas exploration in the disputed South China Sea, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday. "The negotiations are ongoing on the South China Sea. The potential for a possible agreement is rather large. Moscow and Beijing have a specific joint interest in reaching such an agreement, which will be beneficial for all parties," Zakharova told reporters in Paris. She stressed the importance of discussing territorial issues during the meeting. "At the level of foreign ministers and military leaders, this issue has been discussed a lot, and they decided that such an agreement should be negotiated at an appropriate time and place, which for the present depends on the negotiation of a new treaty of security in Europe," Zakharova said. The South China Sea region is an increasingly tense area, marked by a series of territorial disputes involving a number of countries in Asia. Russia, China, and other countries have submitted proposals on how to avoid possible accidents at sea that could lead to a military conflict in the area. A previous agreement between Moscow and Beijing to avoid an accidental naval clash in the South China Sea was concluded in 2012. With tensions rising in the area in recent years, they are likely to escalate further in the coming years. "I believe that the new policy of President Vladimir Putin, as implemented by the leaders of China and Russia, will go much further in promoting a comprehensive strategic dialogue between the regional powers on the principles of respect for territorial sovereignty and international law," Zakharova added. Earlier this month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed with his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Wei Fenghe, the existing measures for the prevention of military incidents in the South China Sea.
